Summer is known as the season for outdoor fun and relaxation. But we are not the only ones that enjoy the warmer weather. Many insects hibernate through the colder seasons and begin to emerge with the rise in temperatures. So when you are headed outside or planning your next vacation, keep this in mind and start taking some preventive measures.

Some of the most common summer pests you’re likely to encounter are mosquitoes, ticks, bees, wasps, and ants. Don’t let them put a damper on your fun. Learn what to keep an eye out for and how to prepare your home to keep it pest-free.

Killer bees

Killer bees are a more dangerous breed of honey bees. Killer bees get very aggressive when disturbed and can chase a person for more than a quarter-mile. The worst part of killer bees is that they attack in a swarm and are relentless. Due to their sheer numbers and aggressive nature, a pest control professional or beekeeper should address an Africanized bee infestation.

Mosquito

Mosquitoes are the most common summer pests. The bite of the common mosquito is usually harmless, but it is capable of spreading pathogens that can cause disease. A single bite can transmit dangerous diseases into your body. They have historically been vectors for diseases like West Nile, Zika, dengue, and yellow fever, among others. Mosquitos can also spread heartworm to domesticated dogs. Make sure to remove standing water to deny mosquitoes breeding spaces.

Spiders

Spiders usually become hyperactive during summers and can easily make their way inside your home and any objects that are kept outside. Spiders are a beneficial member of your yard and garden, as they specialize in killing pests. Most spiders are harmless, but some can be very dangerous, such as black widows and brown recluses. The best thing to do is to be alert when outdoors, and try to maintain your yard clean and clear of hiding spots.

Ticks

Ticks are more abundant in the spring and summer months. These blood-sucking parasites are commonly found in areas with thick foliage and tall grass. Ticks will climb up people and pets looking for a convenient place to latch. Once attached, ticks will remain and feed until full. The bite will leave painful swelling that can be easily infected if scratched. Ticks also carry dangerous diseases such as Lyme disease and Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever.  Regular yard maintenance is helpful in preventing ticks from moving in. Bug repellent that contains DEET is also recommended.

Red Fire Ants

You probably have noticed big red ants in your yard. Our advice would be to stay away from them. Red fire ants got their name from sore bites and stings. Their stings contain high toxin concentrations that could cause a burning sensation, infection, severe rash, and lethal allergic reaction in some people. If stung multiple times, it often results in a weak or rapid pulse, dizziness, nausea, fainting, and low blood pressure. If you are experiencing any of these, seek a doctor’s attention immediately.
